ORDINANCE NO. BL2007-1387

An ordinance naming the roundabout right-of-way, located at the intersection of Division Street, 16th Avenue South, Music Square East, and Demonbreun Street, "Buddy Killen Circle" (Proposal No. 2007M-019U-10).

WHEREAS, Buddy Killen (1933-2006) had a long, successful music career in Nashville both as a musician and businessman; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Killen began his musical career playing bass on the Grand Old Opry and on various recordings; and

WHEREAS, in 1953, Jack Stapp, the founder of Tree Publishing, offered Mr. Killen a job with the firm as a "songplugger";

WHEREAS, Buddy Killen went on to become a part-owner and vice president of Tree Publishing in 1957, and became president of the firm in 1974; and

WHEREAS, during Buddy Killen's tenure at Tree Publishing, the firm published numerous hit songs recorded by artists such as Elvis Presley, Porter Waggoner, Roger Miller, Jim Reeves, George Jones, and Tammy Wynette; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the roundabout located at the intersection of Division Street, 16th Avenue South, Music Square East, and Demonbreun Street be named in honor of Buddy Killen for his important contributions in making Nashville, Tennessee the country music capital of the world.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ENACTED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the roundabout right-of-way, located at the intersection of Division Street, 16th Avenue South, Music Square East, and Demonbreun Street, is hereby named "Buddy Killen Circle", all of which is more particularly described by lines, words and figures on the sketch which is attached hereto and made a part of this Ordinance as though copied herein.

Section 2. That the Director of the Department of Public Works be and is hereby authorized and directed, upon the enactment and approval of this ordinance, to erect the appropriate signage at the roundabout right-of-way designating such right-of-way as "Buddy Killen Circle".

Section 3. That this Ordinance shall take effect immediately after its passage, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
