SUBSTITUTE ORDINANCE NO. BL2006-1304

An ordinance to amend the Official Street and Alley Acceptance and Maintenance Map for The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, by changing the name of Gateway Boulevard between South Second Street and 4th Avenue South to "Korean Veterans Boulevard" (Proposal No. 2006M-231U-09).

WHEREAS, during the years 1950 through 1953, the United States joined with United Nations forces in Korea to combat what was deemed to be a threat to democratic nations worldwide; and

WHEREAS, 1.8 million U.S. troops served during the period of hostilities in Korea; and

WHEREAS, at the end of the Korean War, 33,629 members of the U.S. Armed Forces had been killed, 103,284 wounded, and 5,178 missing or captured; and

WHEREAS, 8,176 U.S. troops are still listed as missing in action as a result of the Korean War; and

WHEREAS, on January 17, 2006, the Metropolitan Council enacted Ordinance No. BL2005-913 to name the newly constructed Gateway Bridge the "Korean War Veterans Memorial Bridge"; and

WHEREAS, in order to appropriately tie in with the Korean War Veterans Memorial Bridge, it is fitting and proper that Gateway Boulevard be renamed “Korean Veterans Boulevard”.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ENACTED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1.      That the Official Street and Alley Acceptance and Maintenance Map for The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, as enacted by Ordinance No. BL2005-880, be and is hereby amended, as follows:

All of Gateway Boulevard between South Second Street and Fourth Avenue South be, and is hereby, renamed “Korean Veterans Boulevard”, all of which is more particularly described by lines, words and figures on the sketch which is attached hereto and made a part of this ordinance as though copied herein.

Section 2.      That the Director of the Department of Public Works be and is hereby authorized and directed, upon the enactment and approval of this ordinance, to cause said change to be made on said Map as set out in Section 1 of this ordinance, and to make notation thereon of reference to the date of passage and approval of this amendatory ordinance.
Section 3.      That this Ordinance shall take effect immediately after its passage, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
