ORDINANCE NO. BL2005-913
An ordinance naming the newly constructed Gateway Bridge the "Korean War Veterans Memorial Bridge".
WHEREAS, during the years 1950 through 1953, the United States joined with United Nations forces in Korea to combat what was deemed to be a threat to democratic nations worldwide; and
WHEREAS, 1.8 million U.S. troops served during the period of hostilities in Korea; and
WHEREAS, at the end of the Korean War, 33,629 members of the U.S. Armed Forces had been killed, 103,284 wounded, and 5,178 missing or captured; and
WHEREAS, 8,176 U.S. troops are still listed as missing in action as a result of the Korean War; and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Government recently constructed the Gateway Bridge, which has greatly enhanced the downtown area; and
WHEREAS, Section 13.26.010 of the Metropolitan Code of Laws provides that no building or structure of the Metropolitan Government may be named except pursuant to an ordinance duly adopted by the Metropolitan County Council; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Gateway Bridge be named the Korean War Veterans Memorial Bridge in recognition of the sacrifice the Korean War Veterans made for our country.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ENACTED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. That the newly constructed Gateway Bridge shall be and the same is hereby named the "Korean War Veterans Memorial Bridge".
Section 2. This Ordinance shall take effect from and after its passage, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
