SUBSTITUTE ORDINANCE NO. BL2005-581

An ordinance naming the Davidson County Sheriff's Office Training Academy complex as the "Jerry Newson Center".

WHEREAS, the Davidson County Sheriff's Office Training Academy complex, located at 710 South Fifth Street, houses the Training Academy, the Civil Warrants Division, the Transportation Division, the Investigation Division, the Orders of Protection Unit, the Communications Division, and the Dispatch Office; and

WHEREAS, Warrant Officer Jerry Newson, a Nashville resident and dedicated employee of the Davidson County Sheriff's Office, was shot and killed in the line of duty on September 22, 1995, while attempting to serve a warrant; and

WHEREAS, Jerry Newson joined the Davidson County Sheriff's Office in 1988, where he served as a correctional officer, correctional supervisor, and warrant officer; and

WHEREAS, Section 13.26.010 of the Metropolitan Code of Laws provides that no building of the Metropolitan Government may be named except pursuant to an ordinance duly adopted by the Metropolitan Council; and

WHEREAS, Sheriff Daron Hall has requested that the Metropolitan Council rename the Training Academy complex in honor of Mr. Jerry Newson to mark the tenth anniversary of his death.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ENACTED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Davidson County Sheriff's Office Training Academy complex located at 710 South Fifth Street be and the same is hereby named the "Jerry Newson Center".

Section 2. The biographical information for Jerry Newson is attached hereto and incorporated herein by reference as Exhibit A in accordance with Section 13.26.020 of the Metropolitan Code of Laws.

Section 3. This Ordinance shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
