ORDINANCE NO. BL2001-834

An ordinance approving the acceptance of a law enforcement block grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, acting through the Department of Metropolitan Police for the benefit of various departments of the Metropolitan Government.

Whereas, application was made to the United States Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, for an award of grant monies from the Local Law Enforcement Block Grants Program for fiscal year 2001 in an amount not to exceed Two Million Six Hundred Four Thousand Three Hundred Thirty-Five Dollars ($2,604,335) for the benefit of the Department of Police, The Office of The District Attorney General, The Sheriff's Office, Metropolitan Public Schools Justice Information Systems, Drug Court, Juvenile Court and the Office of the Public Defender; and,

Whereas, a grant has been awarded to the Metropolitan Government for the use and benefit of the municipality to reduce crime and improve public safety; and,

Whereas, the participating departments have submitted their intent to meet the ten percent (10%) local match of Two Hundred Eighty Nine Thousand Three Hundred Seventy Dollars ($289,370) and the utilization of said monies within their departments; and,

Whereas, the Department of Police hereby accepts oversight and management responsibility of the grant and the matching funds;

Now, therefore, be it enacted by the Council of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County:

Section 1. That the grant from the United States Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance to The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, acting through the Metropolitan Police Department, in an amount not to exceed Two Million Six Hundred Four Thousand Three Hundred Thirty-Five Dollars ($2,604,335), a copy of which is attached hereto and incorporated herein, is approved and the Metropolitan Mayor is authorized to execute the same.

Section 2. That the sums totaling Two Hundred Eighty Nine Thousand Three Hundred Seventy Dollars ($289,370) be provided from the operating budgets of the Department of Police, The Office of The District Attorney General, The Sheriff's Office, Metropolitan Public Schools Justice Information Systems, Drug Court, Juvenile Court and the Office of the Public Defender for the purpose of providing the Metropolitan Government's share of matching funds for the program.

Section 3. That any amendments to this grant shall be approved by resolution of the Metropolitan Council by twenty-one affirmative votes.

Section 4. That this Ordinance shall take effect from and after its passage, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
