An ordinance approving the acceptance of a grant from the United States Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance in the amount of $11,178.98 to The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County for the purchase of bulletproof vests.

Whereas, the United States Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, desires to assist local law enforcement agencies in preventing death and serious injuries to its officers; and

Whereas, The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, acting through the Metropolitan Police Department, desires to minimize the risk to its officers of death and serious injury; and

Whereas, the United States Department of Justice has committed grant funds in the amount $11,179.98 to the Metropolitan Police Department for the purchase of bulletproof vests; and

Whereas, The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County will be required to expend $11,178.98 in matching funds for the purchase of bulletproof vests.

Now, therefore, be it enacted by the Council of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County:

Section 1. That Grant No. 1004513 from the United States Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance to The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, in the amount of $11,178.98 is accepted and the Metropolitan Mayor is authorized to execute the contractual document.

Section 2. That the Metropolitan Government, acting through the Metropolitan Police Department is authorized to expend the grant funds and a sum not to exceed $11, 178.98 in matching funds for the purchase of bulletproof vests.

Section 3. The grant funds shall be deposited in the Metropolitan Police Department's Account No. 31301301 for use in the purchase of bulletproof vests.

Section 4. Any amendments or extensions of this grant shall be approved by resolution by not less than 21 affirmative votes of the Metropolitan Council.

Section 5. This ordinance shall take effect from and after its final passage, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
