ORDINANCE NO. BL2000-140

An ordinance approving the acceptance of a law enforcement block grant from the U. S. Department of Justice to the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, acting through the Department of Metropolitan Police for the benefit the Department of Police, the Office of the District Attorney General, the Sheriff's Office, Metropolitan Public Schools, Criminal Court, Juvenile Court, Public Defender, the Justice Information Systems, and the Council of Community Services, and approving matching funds therefor.

Whereas, application was made to the United States Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, for an award of grant moneys from the Local Law Enforcement Block Grants Program for fiscal year 1999 in an amount not to exceed Two Million Seven Hundred Ninety-Five Thousand Eight Hundred and Six Dollars ($ 2,795,806.00) for the benefit of various departments of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, acting through the Metropolitan Police Department; and,

Whereas, a grant has been awarded to the Metropolitan Government for the use and benefit of the municipality to reduce crime and improve public safety; and,

Whereas, the participating departments have submitted their intent to meet the ten percent (10%) local match, Three Hundred Ten Thousand Six Hundred and Forty-five Dollars ($ 310,645.00) and the utilization of said moneys within their departments; and,

Whereas, the Department of Police hereby accepts oversight and management responsibility of the grant and the matching funds;

Now, therefore, be it enacted by the Council of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County:

Section 1. That the grant from the United States Department of Justice Assistance to the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, acting through the Metropolitan Police Department, in an amount not to exceed Two Million Seven Hundred Ninety-Five Thousand Eight Hundred and Six Dollars ($ 2,795,806.00), a copy of which is attached hereto titled 1999 Local Law Enforcement Block Grant and incorporated herein, is accepted, and the Metropolitan County Mayor is authorized to execute the contract documents.

Section 2. That the sums totaling Three Hundred Ten Thousand Six Hundred and Forty-Five Dollars ($ 310,645.00) be provided from the operating budgets of the Department of Police, The Office of The District Attorney General, The Sheriff's Office, Metropolitan Public Schools, Criminal Courts, Juvenile Court, Public Defender, The Justice Information Systems, and the Neighborhood Alliance for the purpose of providing the Metropolitan Government's share of matching funds for the program.

Section 3. That any amendments to this grant shall be approved by resolution of the Metropolitan Council by twenty-one affirmative votes.

Section 4. That this Ordinance shall take effect from and after its passage, the welfare of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.

Amendment No. 1

Ordinance No. BL2000-140

Mr. President,

I move to amend Ordinance No. BL2000-140 as follows:

Amend the caption to delete the words "and the Council of Community services," after the words "Justice Information Systems," and before the words "and approving matching funds therefore."

Amend Section 2. by deleting the words "and the Neighborhood Alliance" after the words "Justice Information Systems" and before the words "for the purpose of providing. .
