ORDINANCE NO. O99-1551

An ordinance approving a memorandum of understanding between the Metropolitan Police Department of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center for providing support.

Whereas, the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (hereinafter "Veterans Affairs") is located in Davidson County and is required to enter into a written support agreement with local jurisdictions responsible for law enforcement; and

Whereas, Veterans Affairs police unit at the Veteran Affairs facility located in Davidson County is only empowered to enforce federal statutes to arrest individuals who commit federal crimes; and

Whereas, Veterans Affairs desires to enter into a support agreement with the Metropolitan Government for support in the event of, including without limitation, bomb or terrorists attacks, bomb disposal, demonstrations or picketing, hostage standoffs, and any other occurrence where a major show of force is necessary.

Now therefore, be it enacted by the Council of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County:

Section 1. That the Memorandum of Understanding between the Metropolitan Police Department of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center is hereby approved.

Section 2. That this ordinance shall take effect from and after its passage, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
