April 17, 2007
Vice Mayor Howard Gentry
Historic Metropolitan Courthouse
One Public Square, Suite 204
Nashville, Tennessee 37219
Dear Vice Mayor Gentry:
I am writing to inform you that I hereby resign my position as Councilman for the 28th District of the Metropolitan Council effective July 1, 2007. My wife and I are in the process of building a new home in Nolensville, Tennessee and expect to be in the home at latest by the end of June.
As you know, the Metro Charter does not allow a Council member to reside outside their respective districts so I am resigning my official capacity as the 28th District Council Member. However, I still plan to be proactive in representing the needs and concerns of my constituents until the end of the term in August 2007.
The decision to resign with a short time left on my term has been difficult. I understand that it may appear absurd to resign with simply two to three months left in the term. However, I have served on a legislative body with members of great integrity not only in this term but in my previous term as well. With that said, I could not in good conscience serve the remaining months (no matter how short) living in another community outside the one I was elected to serve.
It has been an honor serving with each of you. While we have our differences, I have learned this is our greatest strength. A diverse legislative body of many backgrounds and opinions truly reflects the new community that is emerging in this great city.
Thanks for all your friendship and camaraderie over the past years. The only thing I would change is the amount of hair I have lost over the last eight years due to the stress of responding to phone calls, long Council agendas, historic overlays, and having a motion for previous question fail. Other than this, it has been a great experience that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
All the best in the future,
Sincerely,
Jason Alexander
Councilman, District 28
